WALSH WHISKEY SWEEPS THE BOARD AT THE IRISH WHISKEY MASTERS
Carlow, Ireland
The Spirits Business held its annual Irish Whiskey Masters in London, where an experienced panel of judges recognised the best bottlings of Irish Whiskey in the business. Three of Walsh Whiskey’s finest whiskey expressions received the highest award in their respective categories taking home the prestigious Master medal, reaffirming Walsh Whiskey as the leading independent Irish Whiskey Company.
The Irishman 17-Year-Old Single Malt and The Irishman Founder’s Reserve Caribbean Cask Finish were awarded the Master medal, along with Writers’ Tears Double Oak, the latest core expression to the Writers’ Tears range.
Writers’ Tears Double Oak – Category; Premium Blend, Winner “Master Medal”
The judges at the Irish Whiskey Masters described Writers’ Tears Double Oak as having an aroma of “cherry bakewell” and a “rich finish”.
Writers’ Tears Double Oak has been matured in both American and French oak casks, with the American barrels imparting “bolder flavours” such as vanilla, while the French oak influence offers “silky tannins, a light sweetness and fruity flavours”.
Writers’ TearsDouble Oak is a blend of the two premium whiskey styles aged in two types of wood – American and French Oak. It is triple-distilled, non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV. The new expression is made possible by a close collaboration between the Walsh family in Ireland’s County Carlow and the Legaret family in Cognac, France.
The Irishman 17-Year-Old Single Malt – Category; Super Premium Single Malt, Winner “Master Medal”
In the Single Malt – Super Premium round, The Irishman 17-Year-Old Single Malt was awarded the Master medal, which was described as having a “rich autumnal nose” and “notes of plum.”
The Irishman 17-Year-Old Single Malt was aged for its entirety in first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts. With just three casks (1800 bottles) released every year, this is one of Walsh Whiskeys most exclusive whiskeys.
The Irishman 17-Year-Old Single Malt is triple distilled for extra smoothness and bottled at cask strength 56% ABV.
The Irishman Founder’s Reserve Caribbean Cask Finish – Category; Super Premium Blend, Winner “Master Medal”
Walsh Whiskey’s final Master medal was picked up by The Irishman Founder’s Reserve Caribbean Cask Finish, which judges described as “really fresh and unique.”
The Irishman Founder’s Reserve Caribbean Cask Finish is a limited edition vatting of single malt and single pot still Irish whiskeys, aged in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being finished for six months in ex-Chairman’s Reserve rum casks.
Only 12 casks of the expression were released last June, with each cask generating 380 bottles. A further limited release was made available to the US market early this year. The liquid has been non-chill-filtered and bottled at 46% ABV.
